Interesting article regarding read and write tests and the characteristics that flash media exhibits prior to failure. It's a bit technical but interesting nonetheless. The particular card tested managed to do 90 million writes before failing, and even after failing, the card was still mountable and readable - just not writable.

My Oldest one is 8 years old, and was used 5 daysd a week for at least 6 years.... still works fine despite being stood on and it's plastic shell being held together by tape.
