With the new D4 & D800 out now I am still amazed to find the D700 still way up in price on places like Ebay & Gumtree etc.

Wonder when/if they will drop in price soon?

Nikon has said that they'll keep making them, but they've been almost impossible to find for quite a while. For the D700 price to drop significantly I think they'd need to be in strong supply even after the initial demand for the D800 has been met.

With the single exception of the price, I really can't see any reason to take a D700 over the D800. Nikon might use the availability of the cheaper camera to keep the D800 price higher, but I can't imagine that the D700 will still be around in a year.

Not having looked at all the specs on the 800 (been too busy drooling over the D4).. I havent taken much notice. I guess I was assuming/hoping the price would drop to let as starters and also ones that want to go full frame but cant afford to get a D700.

Guess I will have to keep my eyes open and pray someone decides to sell cheap on the whim of getting a D4
