Hi, everyone! I'm "oldnewbie" from Renton, WA. Been using a P&S for years - now have a Nikon D5100 (my son gave to me). Anyway, so I need to know everything, especially about shooting portraits. I'm expecting a grandson in March and I want to be ready for him! What's a good lens to use for baby shots?

Hello,
Welcome to the group! It is nice to meet you! I am not the expert here on the forums, just the door keeper. :0)
As more members take a look at your intro, hopefully they can let you know what has worked best for them in taking pictures of babies. Congratulations on the new one coming!
The "nifty fifty" (50mm f/1.8 G) would be a great lens to use for portraits. So would the 35mm f/1.8. And they're fairly cheap also. They are both great starter lens, useful in dim light or for shallow depth of field.
Portrait lenses are a case of personal choise, I much prefer a longer lens for children, if shooting candid's, I love my 70-300, as long as the light is good. Great for when they are playing.
For a close up baby portrait I like my 150mm F2.8 macro lens, great portrait lens, and you don't have to be in the child's face to seem to be so close.
For good portrait's youer also going to need a flash, the onboard flash just doesn't cut it in most situations. I prefer a flash you can turn and angle, so as to bounce the light when not outdoors.
Welcome to the forums. I own only the lens that came boxed with my camera, and use it for my newborn pics. Newborns, for me anyway, have been hard. Congrats on the new baby coming! I'm excited to see your photos!
