I'm not saying this is wrong (I know far too little about Photoshop to do that), but I always use Camera Raw and just check "Conevert to Grayscale". Isn't that... easier?

This is one great learning curve for black and white Ed! Worth the read and trying 
Yeah I do it also in the Camera Raw and sometimes in lightroom. I guess it depends on your how you wanted your images to end up. I have lightroom presets and editing that wont look good no matter what but Camera Raw can get it too fine with a few little twitch in the settings. Sometimes I jump over from one platform to another.
