A typical definition of "Still Life" work usually describes it as the creation of a picture of a small group of inanimate objects, their arrangement, composition, and lighting being decided and controlled by the photographer. In view of some (possibly most) of the images here so far, some clarification/guidance from a Mod or Judge would be appreciated, thank you.

Philip
Philip,

Thank you for your post. Here is an article which will give more ideas for the still life category suggested. It also has some photos of the past from some different photographers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_life

Still life represents mostly inanimate objects: 1.Lacking the quality or ability of motion 2. Not being, and never having been alive.

Of course, as with many other areas of photography each person will have their own interpretation of what "still life" is. If you have any other questions, please post them here.
[attachment=2508]We had a bad ice storm in the last two weeks. The trees where covered so thickly in ice that 20% of the trees in town are damaged. The falling branches fell on the electric wires and caused power outages for up to 10 days. All has finally been restored.

Which part of the world taken? Thanks. Ed.
Barbara, thank you for your reply.

The works of art in that Wikipedia article that you quoted clearly demonstrate to the members that "Still Life" is about the artist selecting, arranging, and lighting a group of inanimate objects, to construct an artistic composition.

Your comments, together with the link you supplied, plus many other Internet references that anyone can consult, have helped to confirm my thoughts, as follows:

There are good images here in this thread, but not by the wildest stretch of the creative imagination, even if the mind is influenced by ill-advised chemical substances Smile, can some (most?) of them possibly be described as being of the "Still Life" genre. Confused

Just checked this Wilkipedia site : it says ; may be either natural (food, flowers, dead animals, plants, rocks, or shells)
So perhaps my interperation can remain as shown and in my mind, as a still life.

Also says, inanimate subject matter, which mine certainly is?? Ed.
Here is an image of three pudding bowls and a tomato, illuminated by an LED torch and a home made snoot

Heres the second of my images, this time, I was experimenting with an angle poise light, which is a much warmer light, owing to it being from a tungsten source

This is my third image and in this shot I lit the subject using natural window light and a number of large reflectors to pour light into the shadows on the right hand side of the image

That first one is a well-constructed Still Life image, Ferenc, and I really like the result.

You could have given even more enjoyment by delaying the information, and asking us to try to work out what the objects were! Smile

The others are fine examples also. Thank you.
