I'm TrueNorth and live on the east coast of Canada.
I finally ended my search of a replacement camera for my Canon G10 this fall.
I really wanted to stay with Canon and get a mirrorless style compact camera, but after reading mixed reviews on the G 1X, the EOS M and even the SL1, I gave up and purchased a Nikon D5200.
This Christmas I received a 35mm 1.8f G prime lens.
I also have the Nikon bag that came with a 2nd battery.

Now I just hope I made a good choice.. I was limited a bit by a $1K CDN budget. Tongue

Welcome aboard, TrueNorth!

The D5200 will be quite a step up from the G10.
Can I ask why you didn't consider the SX50, especially since you had a preference for Canon?

Which lens did you get when you bought the D5200?

I, too, have the 35 1.8
Did a great job on HS volleyball this past fall.
The only 'problem' is that it doesn't 'look' like a pro lens <VBG>.
I get way more respect with my 70-300 VR or my 17-55 2.8.
Hey TrueNorth, welcome aboard! In my opinion, the 5200 is a great choice! Looking forward to see some shots from Canada :-)

Hope you like ice and snow. Wink

Does the SX50 have a small sensor?
I wasn't going any smaller than the one in the G1X
Up here the standard kit lens supplied with the D5200 is the AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6g

Yes, the SX50 sensor is 1/9th the area.

You're going to want a longer lens pretty quick.
70-200 or 70-300.

Funny you should mention that.
A local electronics store has the 70-300 lens on for $300.00 at it's Boxing Day sale.
I'm tempted as it seems to be a substantial reduction.
Guess I'd better start the review search at DPreview, Ken Rockwood reviews, CNET etc. There was also a humorous. skinny Asian guy who talks with a British accent and lives in Hong Kong or Singapore who is enjoyable to watch.
I used to see his camera reviews all the time but can't seem to find them now.
Anyway.. on to the research..

D'oh.. on the other hand, this is the exact problem I was trying to avoid with a mirrorless compact camera.
I'm heading back to the same large heavy gadget bag I had with my old Minolta SRT200 35mm film camera that I retired in the late '90s.
