Hello All,

My name is Pam and I've been watching this site for several months. I've finally decided to jump in and get my feet wet. I'm fairly new to digital photography, having purchased a bridge camera last year, and most recently a DSLR. I've decided to post one of my moon photos taken last year with my bridge camera. I'm looking forward to viewing other members pics, as well as learning from them. Here goes..........

Welcome Pam.
Great detail on that moon shot.
I've seen others mention "bridge cameras" before but I can't remember what type that is.
I'd better go see if I can google that class of camera to see what they are comparable to.

I hope this message goes through as I'm having difficulty posting on this site. That said... Thank you for your comments TrueNorth. My bridge camera is the NikonP510 which I used at full zoom to get this shot, hand-held, no tripod, then cropped it with slight sharpening. I've yet to get a similar shot with my Canon DSLR, although I've tried. The bridge cameras do not have detachable lenses and are less expensive than SLR's. You still can work outside of the auto modes with P, S, A, and Manual. When it comes to shooting the moon I get better shots with my bridge camera.

Hi Pam.
Looks like I may own a "bridge" camera and didn't know it.
The camera I recently upgraded from is a Canon G10, which was advertised as the flagship of their compact line. Wikipedia suggested that the slightly older G9 was a bridge camera.
As far as your new DSLR, I wonder if it might be a case of needing an expensive powerful telephoto lens.
Maybe someone could advise what power would be required.. That is 200mm or 300mm etc

Hi TrueNorth,

It sounds like you also have a bridge camera, one that I'm not familiar with. They are certainly much lighter than SLR's and have some good features as well. As far as my Canon SLR is concerned I do have a 55-250mm IS lens that I've tried shooting the moon with. I've tried different settings but can't seem to get the detail that I get with my bridge camera, so that has become my go-to camera where moon shots are concerned. However, my Canon excels in many other types of photography. But the bridge camera is sure nice to have when you don't want to lug heavy equipment around.

Hello and welcome to the forums! Nice photo shot, too! Thanks for joining us and please let us know if you have need of anything!

I hear you.
As I mentioned in here last month, I really wanted to buy a mirrorless compact system type of camera, but to get one I was mildly interested in would have cost me just over a grand CDN plus 15 per cent sales tax.
I compromised and purchased a Nikon D5200 DSLR in October.
Already with the camera, it's 18-55 telephoto kit lens, a new 35mm prime lens and the good sized camera bag have bulked me up almost as bad as in the old 35mm camera days. :-(

I've heard of the mirrorless cameras but I'm not familiar with their advantages. I've decided not to google it because it's too easy to get caught up in a buying frenzy where the latest and greatest are concerned with cameras and equipment. There's always something newer and better on the market, I've decided to focus on just learning more about becoming a better photographer with the equipment that I have. So much to learn! Looking forward to seeing some of your posts in the future. Nice chatting with you.
