Trying to catch the photographer in the horses eyes.
Alone with the animal and no means of constraining her.
Friends enough that she came to have a look a me.

What else can I do to improve the shot.

Increase the drama--sharpness, color correction, contrast and brightness. Maybe black and white would work.

In monochrome:


I prefer this but I generally do prefer monochrome. The main thing wrong with the original is that the tones are all squashed up on the left side of the histogram, giving a dark and flat picture. Distributing the tones gives this (no other processing done):
