In your first image, Peter, you are probably close to the limit of what can be achieved with such a drastic crop. Although Ed's version benefits the image by removing of some of the concrete background, it seems likely that any attempts to enhance the bird will tend to give it a less natural and over-processed look.

I assume that working from a 190 Kb File comes into this, confident that working from the original, all would be OK, the tweaking I did was minimal. Photoshop, and very small files, are not the Norm? Cheers. Ed.

Possibly not, Ed. Assuming that Peter has included most of the 3:2 format of the camera image in Post #3, the bird has less than 4% of the pixels in the whole image.
