I think my problem would probably lie in the post-processing, or even when taking the picture itself.
The sun comes out super overexposed, and has halos of colours out when I see it on the computer.
I'd like to load the RAW here for you to play around, but here's the picture:
Maybe I shouldnt have, but I put the saturation: +100, contrast: +100
I'd like to post the raw so you can show me results from how you processed it.
I made it into black and white (by desaturation) so you can't see the rings of colours, and I think I made it a bit brighter too, just to see how it'll look like
In the first one, you can see the shape of the aperture!

I'm experimenting with the post-processing-thing
Gee Adam. I don't know if I want to play with this. I think the first one is excellent.

Hey beautiful photo, adam! I loike the first one

Lovely sihlouettes.

how to avoid the rings of light around the sun though?
They seem to appear on the overexposed sections.
When shooting it, maybe I should less light in so it doesn't overexpose?
This is just to avoid the coloured rings around the sun.
I'd prefer to see a gradual gradient around the sun rather than those horrible rings on a hexagonal sun

If it ain't broken, don't fix it! I love the picture.
hi
to me .looove the B/W, not sure what is ti...just is better than the colour one.
Regards
Christian
hehe, thanks for all the nice comments

but, if I really wanted to remove the halo around the sun, how would I do so; when post processing? or did I have to shoot it differently? so it doesnt over expose the sun so much?
thanks

Bingo.
If you look at the different color channels in photoshop, your red channel is clipped beyond repair. There is just no information in the channel to salvage.
But it's still a good image as is, and I really like the B&W version - it has a totally different mood than the color.

Hi Adam,
Here is my try to remove the halo. I hope I understood your idea

If so I did this:
~ duplicate your laye image.
-bottom layer: blur average: 31
~top layer adjust contrast>highlight/midtone/shadows:
shadows: 31 midtone: 48 highlight: 100
checked: Absolute adjusted method
visibility 98 (here you can play with the visibility to see what suits you)

Thanks Irma!
That was similar to the sort of the effect I wanted, a bright sun with a gradient coming outwards, instead of the rings of light; I tried the pic again, but got rings again. I'll post in a new thread.
Hey Adam,
Here's my attempt done in Corel PhotoPaint 12.
I masked off the top half of the image so what I was doing wouldn't affect the sun's reflection off the water (but I didn't worry about masking out the silhoettes, I just masked a big rectangle from the horizon up), then used the channel mixer to remove some red from the red channel and replace it with a bit of the green channel, and then remove some green from the green channel and replace it with a bit of red and blue. The coloured halos are caused by individual colour channels getting clipped when they max out, so by mixing in bits of the other channels that aren't clipped in those areas you can soften the effect.
I then edited the tone curve and overexposed it a bit, which also smoothed out the coloured rings.
There are still some remnants of the red and yellow halos but they have been reduced. I also managed to keep a recognisable blown-out shape of the sun in there. Whether that is desirable for you or not is another thing, but I wanted to keep it in if only so that it matches the reflection on the water.
Cheers
Adrian
