The D50 has not been announced, and is probably pure speculation at this point, but apparently Nikon filed a trademark registration on the "D50" at February 8, 2005.
This place even has it listed in their catalog!

Does that mean that after Canon makes the 30D, 40D, then they can't make the 50D?
Why would that be when Nikon's is the D50 not the 50D?

Reading that again, I realised... Well, the first time I read it, I read it as the trademark registration taking that name so that no similar name can be made, then just reading it again made me realise that the point of mentioning the trademark registration was a proof that there was a camera to follow
