Hi, I just joined..... I may be asking a lot of stupid questions about digital cameras as I'm just changing over. I was wondering if anyone has canon D10, D20, D300 or D350's that can tell me what their like and whats the best ( and cheapest for starting out)!

I've got a 300D I think that's the cheapest Canon DSLR at the moment.
Then its the 350D

The money you save by going for the lower priced body can be spent on lenses

The cheaper the better for me at the moment, I just don't want to loose on the quality. I've usd canon film SLR for a while and I'm happy with that so I presume canon digital are just as good. Although I do work with a Nikon slr, it's not mine though!

350D is cheaper than the 300D isn't it Adam? Unless they dropped the price when they bought out the new one.

Danielle, big jump after that 350D is around $1600 (yes I know you can get it cheaper) and the 20D starts at around $2500.00 keeps going up.. 1D MKII is $7,000 and the 1DS MKII around $12,500.00

Depending on how serious you want to take things and what you really want to shoot I'm sure the first two are perfectly acceptable.

$1600, sounds the best for the moment. I can upgrade when I know a bit more a bout what I'm doing. I'm planning on studying graphic design soon at uni so I just want something for that, and to start doing my own work. Where I work at the moment I don't get any rights to my photos, and I want to do my own thing for myself, not for someone else to take the credit! sound s harsh does'nt it! I'm really not mean

300D is cheaper than the 350D Jamie... by $100 on the Canon website, but in reality the difference is more than that because the 300D is actually discounted more than that in the stores, wheras the 350D isn't being discounted much yet coz its a new model.
Personally, I reckon the 350D is *well* worth the extra $$$, and even if the 300D was a lot cheaper I'd still have chosen the 350D. But there is also no question that the 20D is better again, and while I would have preferred a 20D, I considered the difference this would have cost as being better spent on lenses in my situation.
But your needs and budget will probably be different to mine. Just try to get a hands-on demo of each if you get a chance.

Welcome to the board Dannielle. As you can see we're a friendly bunch with the exception of a cranky 'ol fella who thinks he's a dog. We don't try to steal his thunder though.

As everyone has said, the 300D is pretty much the best choice for an entry level DSLR. There are also tons available used for sale as people are always upgrading. If I had of known what I know now, thats the route I would have taken.

I second the opinion regarding the 350D vs 300D. They're practially throwing out the 300D now the 350D is coming (you can get them for about 1285 AUD), but I think the extra 2 megapixels, instant turn on, faster continuous shooting and smaller/lighter construction is worth the extra 2-300 bucks.
