Got some tubes today and had a quick play. Anyone got ideas to make shots as good as possible.

These were done handheld, that is of course a no no. Lighting? Rings?

For the sharpest macro shots, you definitely need a tripod and probably a focusing rail. If you have mirror lockup, use that too.

You lose a lot of DOF when the subject is that close, so stop down the aperture. Some macro lenses go as small as f/45 for this very reason.
I thought this one was pretty good though, this is very fine cotton quilting fabric, looks like open weave wool to me.

Looks good, Pete! Maybe for a different perspective, you could shoot it the coin from an angle, and experiment with different parts of the coin being in focus.

That is a real sharp dof. These shots remind me of the ones I took using a jewelers loupe.
