Do you own any lenses with this feature?
It probably won't beat a tripod (and need to turn it off when on tripod), but is it worth getting a lens with IS for handheld shooting? (is it really good??) Just for general shooting; birds, people.
My FZ10 has IS built-in, if that's what you mean... It's a life-saver! The only wee problem is that when you are at full zomm and trying to frame the shot, or aim the spot meter, etc. the lens tends to lag a little because the IS thinks you're shaking rather than re-composing so you end up chasing your subject all over the viewfinder! My cam has 2 IS modes: (1) IS is always on; (2) IS comes on only when shutter-button is half-pressed. Mode 2 helps with problem I described above.
No, I would like to check it out tho =)
IS generally gives you about 2 extra stops of light - so you can throw out the old 1/focal length rule for non-blurry photos.
So if you're zoomed in to 250mm, usually you need 1/250 or faster. But with IS, that means you can shoot around 1/60...

hey Ada,mm ..
u wanna make it so i have one ..
my birthday is coming up in september ^_-
Give me the money and I'll get you one, then you can act surprised when I give it to you
Two extra stops of light sounds very handy!
I read on another thread Rufus said that it takes a lot of battery.
yeah it would ..
caus eit has some system that detects movement. .and compensates for it ..
dunno how that work though ..
but nay mechanical device added will use extra power ..
Whenever I am concerned about my battery not lasting long enough, I switch to Mode 2... don't know if SLR lenses w/ IS have different modes, though.
what is mode 2 ? ..
idont have that on any of my lenses ~_~
I described it above... the mechanism only comes on when the shutter is half-pressed.
ahh i see ..
i dont have a mode 2 button ...cause i dont have IS ..
my bad ..
so what do you think about the usefullness of IS compared to the exra amount you have to pay for it ?
Well, it's hard to say how much paid for IS... but the FZ10's 12x (~420mm) zoom would be next to useless without it - and I certainly paid for that! I've taken shots at full zoom with no tripod that should've been blurry - but were miraculously clear!!
wow..
im wanting IS now..
cause shooting at 300mm on an eos effectively gives .. 480mm focal length ..
when its bright all is well ..
but in dimmer light ..
the picture looks ok if resized smaller ..
but at full quality ~_~ ..
SHOCKING!
sometimes tripods dont help much on windy days ..
Did I mention the f/2.8 all the way to 12x? I'm just GIDDY!
uhauha OO .. sweet .. .
but yeah ..getting something like that for my SLR = $$$$$
ill wait till im in the workforce b4 i buy something like that.

Here's a
good description of how it works, at least in the FZ10... I don't imagine lenses would be much different.
cool ..thanks .. ill go have a look at it now .
shuttertalk posted a link explaining image stabilisers in
this thread.
