One advantage of the discovery of the Photographic Art will be, that it will enable us to introduce into our pictures a multitude of minute details ...
- William Henry Fox Talbot

A good photograph can capture many small details in a scene, but truly great photographs can express an entire scene in a detail.

In one small moment, you can experience a church, a game of billiards, an old building, or the warmth of a campfire.

Look for the details that express a scene. Use this thread to share your successes and lessons. Archived photos are welcome, but please share with us why they're special to you.
I took this picture last time I was in the cemetery... This little angel caught my eye and I wanted to take a picture of it... I thought about the composition because I didn't want to include names or dates... but just the little detail... I took three pictures with the same composition and just different levels in the headstones...

While taking the picture and thinking whether it would be of any interest or not... I remembered Toad's picture Offering but there were some letters on it... I couldn't manage to get some letters but still I think the shape of the headstones help to the message...

Toad, I hope you don't mind I mentioned your picture, but I like it a lot and it was an inpiration at that moment for my picture... Smile
Hmm. I have thousands of detail shots - I'm a huge fan of zooming in close. Here are a couple taken today for the assignment.

Irma - I thought of "Offering" right off when I saw your photo - before I read your text. Your detail shot of a graveyard is lovely, and has great composition.
a small sample of my camera collection...

Great shots by everyone so far.

This assignment seems very open to interpretation to me. I hope this fits...

I took this last week and was surprised how much detail showed up on the moving ball (every dimple can be seen it the original). It was also a lucky bonus to capture the ball with the brand name perfectly level.

Thought it was time to take part in one of these.... from the archives.

This has been a nice thread, good ideas everyone.
I like your door shot, craig,
and that capture of the ball is a real gem, smarti!

matthew, your inital postings were particularly strong in conveying the atmosphere of a whole thing - building, event....
I don't know that my detail shots do that, but here they are anyway:

I know, I've been neglecting this one. (But there are such great shots already, I don't want to break the momentum...) I haven't been shooting much recently, so here are a few favourites of my own from the past couple of months.

Hagall:

This is from a mothballed industrial complex. (it's probably the most-photographed non-tourist location in Toronto.) I wanted a photo that other people might not have, and this is one I came up with. It also has some personal meaning that influenced the composition.

Being Goofy:

A tacky Hollywood souvenir shop. (As if there's any other kind.) I was walking around, photographing inside the shops, waiting to get kicked out. It never happened, although the proprietor of this shop did follow me around a lot. I eventually spent about $50 here, and no, not on anything in this photograph.

For Uli:

Irma, I love your angel. I can sit here for ages, just looking at it, in a pose very similar to the carving.

Uli, #1 is a fantastic detail. It shows so little, yet the reflection identifies the subject and adds interest. I also like #4, its position looks like a dog tipping her head in puzzlement. It's like it's asking, "Why am I sideways?" Were these taken with your 100mm Macro lens?

Fantastic series all.........

Smarti, your shot reall pops.......very swish Peto, your pic looks almost like a HDR image.....love the colours
Colin, that's a great one!!! really fantastic.

Matthew, yes, that was my macro lense, I am in love with it. And it's such a gem for walking aroung right now, when everything is flowering and coming to life.

7.5 hours ago I was killing time waiting for the gig to start, a few minutes after sunset.
This loose nut is one of four supposed to be holding down a very tall parking lot lamppost.

It's a detail someone else must have missed.

I went to a big flea market today, they have them every weekend in a neighbourhood called "Hell's Kitchen" . It was a nice opportunity for some detail shots, I won't bore you with all of them, but thought I got some nice ones. Again, these have the weakness of not really being able to capture the mood of the whole scenario, but together, they can give an impression.

1. This one doesn't really have to do with the flea market. It's inspirerd by Colin's nail, but not nearly as good:

Hi Uli; that last photo rings a bell...

I was at the Zoo this weekend. One of my favourite animals is the elephant.

This photo brings back great memories of our trip to Ireland, especially Dublin, the coloured front doors in Dublin are famous and every time I look at this photo I can picture the whole street of doors. The photo was taken with my old film Canon Camera and scanned, much better pic than the one of Avoca.

Great pictures in this assignment... a lot of them very inspiring... Smile

I went out yesterday, it seems that now is the time of the year to chop down trees in the forest... I found this that caught my eye...
