Behind me were industrial lights of various kinds. Behind the trees was skyglow from a city. Using a sign as an improvised tripod, I took a fairly long exposure, and this is the color the camera decided was right.

Fantastic... I love low light long exposures too... they really magnify and enhance the colours which the eyes don't readily see. The purple background is simply stunning.
Yeah, this has nice colors.
I get purple sky at night sometimes, too, and love the look.

The industrial lights you mention are usually of two types:
Sodium Vapor looks orange to the eye, and usually reads the same in a digital.
Mercury Vapor looks white to the eye, but renders as green when photographed due to only half of the wave producing light, or so I'm told.
Yes - this is very nice - just the sort of provcessing that appeals to me.
Another great shot Barbarian - almost looks like it has been lit by a giant floodlight.
