So, what is photography? Just taking pictures? How do you define it?

Does taking pictures make you a photographer?

Photographer = one who takes photographs?

Technically - yes.

Photography is fairly simple technical skill using a small set of tools. You take photographs - you are a photographer.

What makes a great photographer is a better question. That is where you have to consider artistry and technical expertise.

I think I fall into the "practices" rather than "skilled in" photography group...

Isn't that why we often hear the phrase 'professional photographer' and 'amateur photographer', or in my case, 'really-crappy-photographer'?

and saw that he had another L lens

we should have mugged him adam !

What was he doing? Not photographing little kids playing I hope...

nah .. he was photographing some chick holding some brochures or something ..
