Very beautiful pictures Paul...
I am so keen on trying again the black background...
I searched for what you said you used, a panel. I found it really nice. I didn't know them.
I am looking for a black backdrop anyway a 3x6m. Do you have any advice about the material, brand?
I like a lot the light in the eyes you have in your pictures. How big is your octabox? Are they just for this purpose or they are also useful to light for example a still life? I had seen already these ones but they are so many.... I really didn't know which one to buy....

Thanx Irma.
The skylitekit is awesome and can be used as bg/reflector/diffuser, depending on the fabric you use.
As for a black muslin, i bought one cheap off ebay. It was a steal for the price i got it for.
LINK
I have a Elinchrom medium Octa.
LINK
The Octa is great for many applications, its mostly known to produce a very even and "wrap around" light source. This due to the shape and often the large size.
So it would definitively work for still life aswell. Just bare in mind that it produce a very soft light and for smaller subjects like product stills it can be to shadowless. Easily redemed by flagging some of the light of or to use a mask on it.
The octas you linked to, im not familiar with that brand, but they where quite cheap, so trying one out wouldnt be a bad idea at all. Surely there are diffrent qualities as for everything, and one of the diffrences is probebly how even it distribute the light, along with build. With that said, iv seen numerous reports where people have been more then satisfied with items very similar to the ones you linked to.
For these shots the octa was placed to far the left of the subject, probebly around 60cm from their faces. The Octa is placed just above the eyeline (in height) Also very often you place the main light 45 degrees to either side of the subject. This was not the case here, i feathered the light, wich means it was around 90 degree left of the subject. (facing the side of the head) this way i will get a softer and even light and the shadows side of the face is very subtle.
Thanx for taking the time to look.

Great shots Paul, and I really like how even the lighting turned out. You can hardly see any deep shadows in the photo...
