Aerial flight is one of that class of problems with which men will never have to cope.
- Simon Newcomb

Mr. Newcomb couldn't have been more wrong -- and aerial flight is something that photographers need to cope with, too. For this assignment, let's look at photos that have the subject completely unsupported. Birds are challenging; planes, blimps, and helicopters add variety; but don't be content with the obvious. Explore other subjects and look for novelty. It's amazing just how much can be up in the air.

Wow! great photos Big Grin
Three different and striking photos; thanks for sharing them. Smarti, I've never seen a photo like yours.

I found out this afternoon that there's a vintage aircraft show and fly-in next weekend. It's nice when unexpected events tie in to assignments. Smile
Here is my butterfly in flight for the assignment. Smile

Sorry about the background, but it is my best picture of this butterfly in flight.
Fantastic shots everyone.
You may get the impression that I'm only taking photos from my balcony these days...

....... Shawn
Shawn, I like that you've been able to keep the ball and player in focus, while still keeping the DOF shallow enough to blur out the spectators. It provides a nice separation.

I decided that I like my second one better like this:

It's the 60th anniversary of the DHC-2 Beaver, and since the venue was the manufacturer's Toronto facility, there were several on hand:

...but I only got photos of the one plane airborne:

And on my way home, I spooked a flock of seagulls. I actually really like this photo, but I know I'm odd.
