Interesting video on making a $2 tripod out of wires, but I'm not sure if I trust using my thousand dollar DSLR on a flimsy looking thing like that...

Interesting video, but I certainly wouldn't trust it to anything bigger than my P&S.

I'm trying to figure out who this 'tripod' would appeal to.
...so far I haven't thought of anyone. :/

extreme tightarses?

I think that is pretty cool and I could see lots of uses for it. I would substitute a real tripod head screw though so that the crucial connection is secure and wobble-free.
